Best Scenic Leaf-Peeping Drives in Waterville Valley

As fall sweeps across New England, the White Mountains burst into vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow. The easiest way to take in this spectacular show of nature? A scenic drive through one of our many scenic roadways! Whether you’re a seasoned foliage chaser or visiting for the first time, these stunning routes will provide unforgettable views and plenty of photo-worthy stops.

NH Route 49

Starting your adventure in Waterville Valley, NH Route 49 is more than just the gateway to our little mountain town—it’s the perfect introduction to leaf-peeping season. The road winds through the Mad River Valley, with mountains rising on either side. Along the way, you’ll spot cascades of color blanketing the hillsides and have plenty of opportunities to pull off and enjoy the view.

Kancamagus Highway

Arguably one of the most iconic foliage routes in all of New England, the Kancamagus Highway (NH Route 112) takes you deep into the heart of the White Mountain National Forest. Beginning in Lincoln, this 34.5-mile stretch is a must for any leaf-peeping itinerary. Known for its sweeping mountain vistas, roaring rivers, and fall foliage so bright it practically glows, the "Kanc" promises a drive you won’t forget. Be sure to stop at scenic overlooks like Sabbaday Falls and Rocky Gorge for a closer look.

Tripoli Road

For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, take a drive along Tripoli Road. This lesser-known gravel road cuts through the mountains and offers a serene escape from busier highways. You’ll feel like you’ve entered a secret world of towering trees and golden leaves. With limited cell service and fewer crowds, Tripoli Road is perfect for those seeking a peaceful foliage retreat.

Franconia Notch Parkway

Franconia Notch Parkway (I-93) is a dramatic leaf-peeping route framed by towering rocky cliffs, alpine peaks, and crystal-clear lakes. As you pass through the notch, take in views of iconic landmarks like Cannon Mountain and the Flume Gorge. The stunning colors of autumn reflect off the surface of Echo Lake, making it a must-see stop along the way. Artist’s Bluff is a short hike located right off the Franconia Notch Parkway, providing stunning views of Echo Lake and Cannon Mountain.

Sandwich Notch Road

For adventurers craving an old-fashioned New England experience, Sandwich Notch Road delivers. This narrow, unpaved road winds through forests, meadows, and over streams, offering a rustic charm that perfectly complements the surrounding foliage. Because of its rough terrain, this route is best suited for vehicles with four-wheel drive, but the quiet beauty of the landscape is worth the ride.
